barley SWINE

Austin, Texas

Barley Swine is a unique Austin dining experience driven by the hospitality and passion of the restaurant staff. Everything on the menu is sourced from the local food community and is ever-changing to create a fun and creative experience for guests during every dining visit.

The design challenge was to create an environment for a unique dining experience.  Barley Swine’s interior evokes the experience of an energetic dinner party, where guests gather in the kitchen to be near the action. In fact, the restaurant is designed to give every seat in the house a view of the kitchen, so that the energy from the kitchen staff flows into  the dining room, adding to that dinner-party experience and excitement.

Contrary to the common practice of maximizing leasable square footage, the project benefited by removing 511 sf from the building, creating an iconic outdoor patio for Barley Swine guests to enjoy dining, creating a more intimate dining experience. At the rear of the building, a loading dock was converted into a working garden for the restaurant, immediately accessible to chefs at work in the kitchen.

In carrying out their mantra of “local, local, local,” the team made this goal central to the design process, utilizing as many local artisans, craftsmen and companies as possible throughout the project.
