Article - Austin Business Journal

As the commercial real estate sector powers ahead in the resilient Austin economy, the cream of the crop in the field was recognized during the 2022 Commercial Real Estate Awards.

Hosted May 12 by Austin Business Journal, the awards shone the spotlight on the companies and people who overcame supply chain hiccups, managed labor shortages and navigated complex financials.

Eleven project and transaction winners were crowned, including an overall project winner, a deal of the year and a community impact award. You can read more about the winners below, and click on the links in the headers to dive into longer stories.

Nominations were judged by a panel of industry leaders based on a variety of criteria including size, complexity and impact on the community. This year's judges were Stephen Coulston, principal, Perkins&Will; Elise Giles, senior vice president, Sunflower Bank; Charles Heimsath, president, Capitol Market Research; Glenn Preuss, broker/associate, Compass CTW; Chris Randazzo, senior vice president, GarzaEMC; Chris Szeliga, senior vice president, JE Dunn Construction; and Camille Urban Jobe, principal, Jobe Corral Architects.

Plus, Clarke Heidrick, an attorney with McGinnis Lochridge and longtime volunteer and contributor to big civic projects, was given the 2022 W. Neal Kocurek Commercial Real Estate Special Achievement Award.

Cork & Barrel combines an Irish pub experience with a unique Texas flair.

To meet the challenge of creating an authentic pub experience, the team utilized traditional Irish building methods. A variant of the "double-pile" house, the project splits into two uniform gable buildings that run parallel to one another with a detached pavilion on the same structural axis as the main building.

The symmetrical forms share an appropriate roof pitch of 45 degrees, which provides a visual balance between wall and roof and is a defining characteristic of traditional Irish building methods. Shifting the two structures along their parallel axis created a visible entry and revealed a transparent passage, through the interior, to the preserved woodlands beyond.

As a place where Irish flair meets Texas fare, this lively pub has already made a mark on the Round Rock community.
